Flux, in plain words

Flux is the part of the glaze that melts everything else. Too little and the surface stays dry and stony; too much and the glaze runs off the pot and onto the shelf.

Our rule of thumb for reading recipes: look at the flux total before anything else. It predicts the firing better than the name of the glaze does.
